Top Ten Fairy Tale Retellings If You Like The Lunar Chronicles

TTT is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

This week's topic is to recommend ten books based on a particular book or author. I've decided to go with The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. While I never read a book just because it's a fairy tale retelling, I must admit I really enjoy them.

So, in no particular order...

1. Spinning Starlight by R.C. Lewis

I really enjoyed this book when I first picked it up (see my review here). This is one of the rare books I read this year where as soon as I reached the last page, I was tempted to go back to the beginning and re-read it all over again. It's a fairy tale retelling of The Wild Swans.

2. Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier

This is another retelling of The Wild Swans. However, while Spinning Starlight is set in a far-flung future full of technological wonders and space travel, Daughter of the Forest is set in roughly the ninth century in Ireland and Britain. Looking at the two books, it's really interesting how two authors have taken the same fairy tale and shaped it into their own. Bear in mind, Daughter of the Forest is aimed at a more mature audience and may contain themes that younger readers may find distressing.

3. Abandon trilogy by Meg Cabot

Based loosely off of Hades and Persephone, I really enjoyed the Abandon trilogy by Meg Cabot. It has elements of the mythology and full of Meg Cabot's contemporary high school humour.

4. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

This book is definitely one of my favourite books this year (see my review here). Based on Beauty and the Beast, the blend between the traditional fairy tale and Maas' own imagination is so seamless, you really have a difficult time telling the two apart. Definitely high recommended.

5. Avalon High by Meg Cabot

Again, Meg Cabot brings her contemporary humour and high school setting - this time to the Arthurian legend. Funny, fast-paced, with plenty of twists, I'm a little bit sad this is only a standalone.

6. The Road of Avalon by Joan Wolf

Another Arthurian legend retelling I enjoyed. This interpretation is more adult and sadder than I imagined. But amazing nevertheless.

7. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire

One guess which fairy tale this novel is based off of. I never expected to enjoy this book as much as I did.

8. Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier

Wildwood Dancing is an old favourite of mine. I didn't know it when I first read it, but it is a reinterpretation of the 12 Dancing Princesses. However, in true Juliet Marillier style, the story contains far more than just one fairy tale retelling and there's always the tinge of a bittersweet ending.

9. Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas

You really have to squint your eyes to see it, but Throne of Glass is slightly reminiscent of Cinderella (see my review here). The resemblance is quickly lost as subsequent installments take on more of an epic fantasy tone.

10. Stardust by Neil Gaiman

And once you are sick of all the fairy tale retellings, let me recommend Stardust by Neil Gaiman (see my review here). It's a fairy tale that goes against most fairy tale conventions about prophecies and quests, and is just generally awesome!

So there you go, those are the ten books I recommend for this week. Which books did you pick?
